A drive in pallet racking system acts by the operator driving the pallet down the storage lane to the back and lowering the pallet on the guide rails which support the pallet upon the loading and retrieval process.

Each storage lane can only be entered by either the front (a true Drive In configuration) or back (a Drive Through) of the rack, a Drive Through system improves stock rotation as there is limited access to the majority of the pallets and so allowing access from two ways cuts down on unloading and loading times.

Benefits of a Drive In Pallet Racking system

  • Offers maximum density of storage in the space available
  • Removes aisles allowing access to more pallets in a smaller area
  • Storage of fragile products works great as damages are reduced
  • Offer storage for multiple types of products as they can be split up into different lanes
  • Can be multi-purpose, great in cold stores as the density of stock minimises the cost in temperature controlled environments

A Drive in Pallet Racking System is a very high and effective way to store pallets in your warehouse. The best part of a Drive In Pallet Racking System is that it does not require any aisles, this system needs a much smaller footprint than the other conventional wide aisle pallet racking system, allowing you to place a high amount of pallets away in an incredibly compact way.

However the not so good side of the drive in pallet racking system is that it is very selective. However if you’re a company that despatches or receives in bulk then this Pallet Racking System is the perfect system for you. This is due to drive in storage systems using a First In Last Out (FILO) basis and therefore is most beneficial to those who store a lot of the same kind of product where selectivity is not a priority. For a business that implements this but stores a lot of different products it can be increase unloading times significantly because if the pallet at the back of the rack is needed all the other pallets in front need to be removed in order to access and pick (FILO).

If your main objective of a drive in pallet racking system is storage density, this is by far the best solution as there is nothing else that allows for pallets to be stored in a compact way. Not only this but drive in pallet racking can be used to store any size pallet and each is individually supported and so damages are less likely to happen.

Where would a drive in pallet racking system be best used?

A drive-in pallet racking system is best suited for the warehouse that has to handle in bulk or seasonal demand goods, where the input and output volumes are at different times. This pallet racking system is also good for companies that despatch in bulk, for example companies that manufacture and supply products to the FMCG sector, also this is great for cold stores (mass refrigeration and freezing) as the maximum use of space and storage is required.
